American Idol Hollywood Group Rounds (Episode 10) Recap.

View Comments

Referred to as hell week, American Idol Hollywood week, group rounds thursday night is all but hell to watch. It was definitely an entertaining hour of feel-good triumphs to the downright nasty, with contestants screaming out their Lady GaGa “OOO Ra-Ras” against one another, accusations of ‘plagiarism’ and petty “They STOLE our idea!” remarks flung carelessly towards the recording cameras, made complete with pitchy harmonies and distinctively bad vocals in the background.

Oh, what fun.

The ‘Dreamers’, one of the many tacky group names Idol contestants came up with this episode, including contestant Alex Lambert (what a name sweetheart), and ‘Cliché-rocker’ Mary Powers, went into a bit of a stir when two of their members went missing at the beginning of rehearsals, causing a ‘camera-panic’ ( defined as a state of panic exaggerated by a bad reality TV actor to effectively enhance the mood of a situation at play) The producers, probably dying for a sound bite then, were almost certainly ‘ecstatic’ when ‘Cliché-rocker’ Mary Powers announced,

“These two are not here. They’re fired!”

Contrary to what I’ve been reading on most sites, I don’t think Mary Powers is a bitch. She’s just a crazy control freak.

Oh Mary, what drama, and we are not even gonna talk about your business suit.

Another thing that is tremendously distracting for me this episode, I mean other then ‘Big Mike/over-pimped’ Michael Lynche’s enormous pecs and cold nipples, are his backstories that the producers shoved down our throats (and not in a good way) that I honestly couldn’t care less about. I love babies and all (ok not that much. I lied) but I’ve mentioned this before,

“ I HATE BACKSTORIES especially if they are over-emphasised to support a contestant who otherwise has a pretty average voice.”

‘Over-pimped’ Micheal Lynche’s voice is not just average, its nasal.

I have honestly no idea why they are ‘Pimping’ him so hard this season. I just don’t get his appeal, other then to fellow bears and cubs. (of whom I am friends with, who I love, very much)

‘Big Mike’ mentioned,

“I just can’t wait to get home to meet her(his wife and baby)”

I understand ‘Big Mike’. You and me both.

On a positive note however, I have to give a HUGE shout out to my favourite contestant this episode (at least), Charity Vance, of whom I have been endearingly referring to as ‘Singing sparrow’. Listening to her sing is like listening to a sweet blonde canary on a beautiful summer day. I was so engrossed with her performance that I totally blocked out the effort from the rest of her group members. I’m sure they sang well. Oh Charity, the things you do to me, again.

This episode also brought light to a number of praiseworthy contestants that had previously not been given any form of airtime before. Siobhan Magnus, (Seriously?) who even though was a tad bit wierd, was incredible, along with group member ‘possible-bitch’ Todrick Hall, ‘Purple bangs’ Theri and ‘Acrobat’ Jared Liewer, performing LadyGaGa’s Bad Romance, complete with innovative and engaging choreography . Other contestants worth a shout out include ’Pimped-spot/possible winner’ Andrew Garcia, ‘Packaged-artist’ Katie Stevens, ‘Smooth-as-butter’ Jermaine Purifoy, 'Cry-cry-baby' Didi Benami, ‘Third time the charm’ Angela Martin, “High-note’ Jermaine Sellers, Ashley Rodriguez and ‘Urban Hottie’ Tim Urban.

AMERICAN IDOL 9, HOLLYWOOD WEEK (Episode 9)

View Comments
Last night was the long anticipated night that fans of Idol, Paula Abdul and Ellen Degeneres, although with possibly different intents, all came together to witness the dawn of a new permanent judge on American Idol.

Ellen, although funny in most bits, was somewhat redundant at times with the humour in her remarks, similar to a generally lovable, yet occasionally annoying child in a class of forty constantly raising her hands at each and every opportunity, merely craving for attention. Having said that, I suppose we can only imagine the pressure the contestants are going through, appreciating any kind of ‘positivity’ that they can garner, even if it means criticisms cloaked under the most perplexing of jokes. On the other hand, I did find myself silently ‘giggling’ (yes i tend to do that sometimes) when she teasingly mentioned to Simon, “So this is it? I come on and you leave..”

Ellen’s jokes aside, episode 9 proves to be packed with early favourites from round-one auditions, giving light (maybe even slightly more than a suggestion, although one can never be too sure) in revealing the contestants from season 9 that will probably be getting the ‘pimp-spot’ from the producers .

With that, before I share with you the highlights of the first round of Hollywood week and as a welcome to our favourite new permanent judge on American Idol (and being true to the way Ellen has been starting off her shows)

“KAAAa KAAAAAaaaa.”

Katie Stevens starts off Hollywood week with her rendition of a Stevie classic, "For once in my life"

Andrew Garcia singing 'Straight Up', by Paula Abdul.

Janell Wheeler singing 'American Boy' during the first round of Hollywood Week.

Haeley Vaughn in Hollywood Week singing  "Change" by Taylor Swift.

Lily Scott with her rendition of Lullaby of Birdland during the first round of Hollywood week.

Michael Lynch singing 'Waiting for the world to change'

Casey James Singing 'I don't need no doctor'.

Didi Benami Singing 'Terrified' for Hollywood Week Round 1

Crystal Bowersox during the first round of Hollywood week singing 'Natural Woman'

Post pre-written on MSWord at 11 32am:

For some particular reason, I couldn’t receive any internet access today. Being a computer illiterate that I am, I tried clicking on foreign buttons, trying my best to keep up with instructions that the ‘help’ service was coldly presenting me with, only to be even more confused. Honest to say the least, I was not even sure whether I asked for the right kind of help in the first place, since I was not even certain of the help that I needed. As I slowly (but surely) tangled myself into a messy ‘web’ of instructions, I desperately wished that my computer was telepathic or functioned on VERY general voice commands meant for those electronically-challenged. Maybe something like,

“Get me on the internet.”

"I just don't get it."

I'm not racist. I just don't like colours. (UPDATE)

View Comments
With reference to my previous post, "I'm not racist. I just don't like colours", and a gazillion (Yes. im channelling Randy Jackson here) thanks to Chris Foo, my new Facebook friend whom I recently met at the Double-Pink-Birthday party, we have photos of my once in a lifetime inclusion of colours in my clothes! (even though all of the photos which I took that night was stolen, along with my phone)

Ok fine. I cheated just a little bit. But for the fact that its bright pink with white poka dots, thats one hell of a leap-of-faith for me.

Apparantly there were so many people celebrating their birthday that night. Yeah.  I lost count.

And theres nothing more joyous then to have three guys blowing.
Candles off a birthday cake I mean,

And yes. We were all dressed within the dresscode guidelines.

WAS LAST SEEN 'FLASHING' AT A GROUP OF GUYS IN A BIRTHDAY PARTY ON SATURDAY NIGHT, 6TH OF FEBUARY, AROUND 11 40 PM. IF SPOTTED WITH ANYONE ELSE OTHER THEN ITS RIGHTFUL OWNER, DO COME UP TO THE PERSON, KICK HIS BALLS UNTIL IT TURNS AS RED AS THIS MESSAGE.

AND TAKE THE PHONE.

(ALRIGHT. This is the last time.)

I am NOT (yet) suffering from any mental disorder.

There have been enquires from concerned bloggers with regards to my mental welfare and I’m glad to officially announce that for the record, I do not suffer from a medical condition known as objectophilia. I might refer to objects from time to time as my ex (or current) lovers, babies, bitches, girlfriends and boyfriends, but I do so, USUALLY in jest. Even when not, I do so out of love for all my belongings and definately without any hidden sexual connotations in play. I mean, sometimes I do lie in bed with my phone( well, I guess not anymore), my mp3 player and at times when I do arrive home extremely tired, having had a drink or two too many, I tend to let my guard down just a little bit and undress with the presence, and in full view for my circle-lenses to see (literally) BUT i maintain the fact that I do so, (once again) without any hidden sexual connotations in play.

That is all I have to say.

A much needed form of release.

View Comments
It was 3 15 in the afternoon and the anger I had for the dishonest hag who stole my phone is still very much intact. As I hurried to the gym for my daily routine, I couldn't help but recall incidents that have took place for the past two days, of which had a massive detrement on my usually chirpy and happy demeanor. Apart from (once again) the dishonest hag who stole my phone, the incident with regards to the homophobic guy from facebook who had such an unatural (or natural) hatred for a community of people, a minority no less, was just stuck at the back of my mind, planted in it, like a growing, breathing tumour, and i just couldn't shake it off.

As my workout progressed, much of it fueled by my recent rush of anger that even Miley Cirus and Kesha on repeat couldn't relieve, I redirected it toward lifting the cold metallic weight plates and bars, I just couldn't figure out how someone can have that much hate towards something, or someone. I mean, I have to admit that recently I did have an update on facebook where i wished that the hag who stole my phone would,

"die the most horrible death and get into an accident where he'll lose his stealing hands and has to live a hard and painful life as a cripple, without both his eyes and function with a half damaged brain."

I have to admit, extracting the anger aside, what I hoped would happen to this dishonest-stealing-hag, might be a little extreme (and sadistic), but this extreme anger and hate which i personally feel is justifiable,  is specifically directed towards someone (a thief) who has done me considerable emotional harm. This other person(lets just refer to him as 'Straight')'s anger however, which is directed to a whole community of people, was simply brought on by some wierdo on facebook who merely asked him in a private chat, whether Straight would allow another guy to touch his body. Well, just for the benefit of those who has not had the chance to come upon this 'interesting conversation', Straight actual reply to this 'proposal' was,

"Fuck off faggot!"

I suppose, up this point, being the diplomat that I am, I felt that Straight's reaction, although slightly harsh, was appropriate. However, Straight's potty mouth did not stop there, he went on a little bit futher, the 'golden-nugget' being,

"I HATE GAYS AND HOPE YOUU DIE! yes... Im homophobic... so fuck off"

If you are slightly more understanding, and was naturally born with a higher level of tolerance then most, I suppose that you might even argue how this response is still considered appropriate, given the circumstances. However, like all great 'activists', Straight did not stop there. He decided to start an online thread, an album on facebook to be specific, of encounters he has with gay people online(and offline), titled: (and here comes the second 'golden nugget') "I hate gays and I hope they DIE", complete with an 'album description' which reads,

"This is gonna be a compilation of encounters with the "other" kind. To be specific, gays.. No.. FAGGOTS. These degenerate nincompoops without any moral decency should not even be allowed a life!

FAGGOTS destroy the natural reproductive cycle of human being. No religion accept them. No sane society recognises them (thank god Singapore still has the law against unnatural sex) and no functional family person wants them. So why are they still here? the question still remains..."

Other then the fact that he refered to gay people like how the blue people were referred to in the movie, Avatar, I felt even more disturbed knowing that I have actually been in close contact numerous times with this person for at least a year, given the fact that I used to work out in the gym that his father owns. Straight clearly felt the same way (maybe more so) towards gay people like I did toward my handphone-stealing-hag.
A thought suddenly came racing to me,

"How is it possible for a whole community of people be perceived of with such hate and anger equivalant to how I felt about a thief who has personally done me harm? Are gay people simply regarded as criminals and sub-standard members of society simply because they are born with different wants and needs?

Finishing up the last repetition for my bicep curls, with half the energy and less of the anger that i had arriving at the gym, I recalled my experiences as a child and a teenager, of how I feared the idea of being 'out', denying and lying through my teeth about my sexuality, even when obviously the odds were against me. I thought of how much I have grown as a person, being an out gay man, (most times), socially and professionally, and here I was, presented with this incident which made me realise one thing, It has not changed one bit. The scariest thought of all is that it possibly never will.

I walked out of the gym, hurried to the bus stop and boarded the bus, avoiding all forms of eye contact  from possible homophobes who might derive great pleasure from killing me.  I suppose I did feel slightly better, simply from just thinking it through, the thought of writing and having an outlet to talk about recent setbacks in my life. Although part of me is still upset at the dishonest-stealing-hag, the other is just ready to let go and to simply just move on. Writing about it became an outlet for me, and I can just hope that Straight derived the same pleasure, a breeze of relieve from all his feelings of hatred and anger that he had previously held on to, all stuffed in his tightly corseted mind.

And just like that, my growing, breathing tumour, previously planted at the back of my mind, disappeared.

Its time to bring out a well-known, committed 'homosexualist' Daffyd Thomas from Little Britian. Daffyd comes from the Welsh town of Llanddewi Brefi. I wonder what Daffyd's response to this would be..

Ah. Well said Daffyd. As always.

I'm too pissed to be awake today. Everywhere I go I want to punch people.

Added to that fact that I just updated my schedule on the phone, I hadn't back up my phonelist and I just got the phone a few months ago, extended my subscription with Starhub and will have to pay full price (700-800ish SGD) if i want to purchase a new one.I woke up late this morning anyways, cause Samsung has been my faithful alarm clock for the past few months.
I apologise for the grammatical error and nothing else.
I still want all that to happen to the person who took it, and more.

I shouldn't have worn anything pink. Such luck.

I'm not racist. I just don't like colours.

View Comments

Two weeks ago, during one of my usual dinner with friends,  I was invited to a double-birthday celebration. Without giving it a second thought I said 'Ok', and within miliseconds I had already confirmed my attendance for the party. I did not think much about it then, and very soon after, as it usually does, the event slipped through my my mind and it was just reduced to being another event that my phone would automatically remind me of, 2 days prior to the actual date.

A week later, as I was routinely checking my facebook account (by the hour), I noticed an 'event-invite' that I had not previously seen. For once, the invite did not seem to be as useless an invite as quizes, Facebook shamelessly promotes. I recodnised the event almost immediately, scrolling down the page, reading the details of which were presented to me. It was the double-birthday celebration that i had been verbally invited to the week before. This time round however, to my dismay, the 'details' included in it stated one alarming fact that I dreaded about parties: tacky party themes, and of all the silly things 'tacky' can represent, this party included the word 'pink'.

People who know me, are familiar with the fact that aside from my artworks, I detest colour, particularly in my clothes. It has not always been that way of course, but quite recently, after years of unsuccessful experimentations and needless to say, exposure with regards to colour and print on clothes, I came to the conclusion that i look best in either black, white, a shade of grey that almost resembles black, greyed,  and muted blues and finally, the lifeliest colour that my skin can handle: Maroon.

I suppose one might think this would definately cut down my time to dress up by a distinct fraction, but one might need to rethink that fact when patterns shades and hues come into play. To top it all off, we have not even begun mentioning about shoes, bags and most importantly, circle lenses.

I just sat in my chair, stunned of the fact that I might have to step out of the warm and cosy comfort that greys and blacks seem to provide me, and step into the world of striking hot pinks, fushia and magenta. I glanced over to my opened wardrobe, and sighed at the sight of greys and blacks staring back at me, as if furious at my possible decision to stray. I shifted my glance back to the monitor screen refreshing my 'window' only to be greeted by another useless Facebook pop up. It was a quiz which reads: "What colour are you?

MY FAVOURITE AMERICAN IDOL 9 CONTESTANTS (WEEK4) Part 2

View Comments

WELL, the first round of American Idol 9 is FINALLY over!

Here is a recap of my favourite contestants from Episode 8, week 4 of the 'On the Road to Hollywood ' Episode.

On The Road To Hollywood. (Episode 8, Week 4)

Didi Benami sang 'Hey Jude' for her audition. Generally I HATE back stories especially if they are over-emphasised to support a contestant who otherwise has a pretty average voice. However, I teared for Didi's. I know.. Don't remind me of my untapped emotional baggage which is usually in an airtight container tucked and hidden safely, in a place most will never find.

It is official. Aaron Kelly is set to take the 'Young Heartthrob' throne away from David Archuleta. And yes, he has the vocals to match. He auditioned for American Idol 2009, singing Miley Cirus's 'The Climb'. Aaron achieved something even Miley Couldn't : Singing in tune. Live.

Jessica Furney auditions for American Idol 9 in Denver singing “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis, and composed by Simon Cowell. She was one of my favourites from last year's first round auditions but unfortunately was cut during Hollywood week. I still like her. Kinda. It's just that this year there are so many Kelly Clarkson sound-alikes that it just makes her seem a tad bit too generic. It was as if all of them went to an Idol-bootcamp and throughout the stay, were strapped in a chair, with toothpicks pressing against their eye-lids, and forced to watch 'instructional how-to-scream-it-like-Kelly-Clarkson  videos'.
I don't know.
I still prefered her last season when she was not so 'put-together'.
She went for a makeover and ended up looking like everybody else.

Lacey Brown, who made it to top 50 in season 8, auditioned this year, singing "Somewhere over the rainbow" It wasn't a perfect audition, but i like her-ish. I can definately see her doing some jazzy bluesey numbers but she has yet to convince me. Just like Randy and Kara, I shall put her through to my Favourites because as Katy Perry puts it, " its because i don't want to say no to them".

Others who have made it to Hollywood this episode include,

Singing teddy Michael Lynche, who sang 'Unchained Melody' for his audition.

(Apparantly Youtube stars *who isn't nowadays* in their own right) Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox.

These contestants sum up First Round Auditions for American Idol Season 9! I can't wait for Hollywood week! Do share with me your favourites for this week!
